RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the 100th anniversary of the Atlanta Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the
Annunciation; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the first immigrants from the country of Greece came to Atlanta, Georgia, in the
late 1890's; and
WHEREAS,
one of the first acts of this immigrant group was to establish a church which
was formally chartered on September 5, 1905, as the Atlanta Greek Orthodox
Church of the Annunciation; and
WHEREAS,
the church's first services were in a room above a retail store on Whitehall
Street and then later in a church building on Garnett Street; and
WHEREAS,
the growth of the Atlanta Greek community required another move to a much larger
location on Pryor Street, a site which served the religious, cultural, and
educational needs of the Greek Orthodox community for almost five decades;
and
WHEREAS,
the continuing expansion of this vibrant church necessitated its members to
build their own church and education center on property on Clairmont Road in
DeKalb County where it continues its ministry today as the Atlanta Greek
Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation; and
WHEREAS,
what began as a small group of newly arrived Greek immigrants is now the
spiritual center for the more than 10,000 Orthodox Christians in Atlanta and
throughout the rest of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
this year of our Lord 2005 marks the Centennial Anniversary of the first Greek
Orthodox Church in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the Atlanta Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation is celebrating its
100th anniversary throughout this year and this community welcomes the citizens
of Georgia to join in the celebration.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Atlanta Greek
Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation and extend to each of its members sincere
best wishes for health and happiness in the years to come.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Atlanta Greek
Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation.
