RESOLUTION
Commending
Brenda James Griffin upon her retirement; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Brenda James Griffin, a native Atlantan, born and raised in the Old Fourth Ward,
graduated from David T. Howard High School, attended Atlanta Junior College, and
graduated from Georgia State University; and
WHEREAS,
she began working with Georgia state government in March, 1973, as a clerk at
the Department of Revenue and worked for the Georgia Department of Agriculture
in January, 1975, as a clerk; and
WHEREAS,
through hard work, perseverance, and talent, she was promoted to Senior
Secretary, Principal Secretary, Administrative Secretary, Public Relations and
Information Specialist, Senior Public Relations and Information Specialist,
Public Relations and Information Program Coordinator, Administrative Assistant,
Assistant to the Director, Administrative Coordinator, and Director of Special
Services; and
WHEREAS,
on April 1, 1999, she was named Assistant Commissioner for Public Affairs for
the Georgia Department of Agriculture; and
WHEREAS,
she became the first African American to serve in this capacity;
and
WHEREAS,
she has been recognized throughout her career for her commitment to agriculture,
farmers, and all the citizens of Georgia, especially children and senior
citizens; and
WHEREAS,
she has consistently sought to teach everyone about agriculture, especially
young people in metropolitan areas, and, to this end, she began the "Ag in the
Classroom" program; and
WHEREAS,
she worked to help farmers and low-income citizens by establishing community
farmers markets at metropolitan housing projects; and
WHEREAS,
she has been honored with many awards throughout her career, including the
National Association of State Departments of Agriculture Communicator of the
Year Award; and
WHEREAS,
she stands as a shining example for young people entering public
service.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Brenda James Griffin for her many years of service,
commitment, and dedication to the citizens of Georgia and extend to her most
sincere wishes for continued success and happiness in her retirement.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Brenda James
Griffin.
