RESOLUTION
Commending
Coach Norman Bonner; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
for nearly four decades, Coach Norman Bonner has been providing strong
leadership and unfailing guidance to the Laney High School Boys Basketball team;
and
WHEREAS,
over the course of his career, he has earned the respect and admiration of his
colleagues as an outstanding biology teacher and an excellent physical education
coach; and
WHEREAS,
his own Laney High School athletic career included such highlights as winning
the 1961 State Football Championship, the first state title in school history,
and leading the defense during his junior year with ten interceptions, a season
record that still stands; and
WHEREAS,
earning a scholarship to play basketball at Hampton, he was the first player in
that school's history to score 1,000 points and was named most valuable player
during his junior and senior years; and
WHEREAS,
as a coach, he not only taught his Wildcats strategies for the court, compiling
an amazing career record of 534-350, but also gave them valuable life lessons,
and the triumphs of his students stand as the true legacy of his distinguished
career; and
WHEREAS,
he is devoted to his wife, Brenda, and is the proud father of his son, Norman,
Jr., and daughter, Bridget; and
WHEREAS,
the Augusta community and the State of Georgia take great pride in the
innumerable accomplishments and contributions of this remarkable educator and
coach.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join to commend Coach Norman Bonner for his outstanding dedication to
his students and athletes and extend their sincere best wishes for his continued
health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Coach Norman
Bonner.
