A RESOLUTION

Commending the Gwinnett County Police Department's Uniform and Communications Divisions and SWAT Team and inviting their members to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, shortly after 9:50 A.M. on the morning of March 12, 2005, an Emergency 911 operator with the Gwinnett County Police Department's Communications Division received a phone call reporting the whereabouts of police suspect Brian G. Nichols; and

WHEREAS, immediately after receiving the information, a Gwinnett County police officer responded to the address at the Bridgewater apartments in Duluth and called for backup; and

WHEREAS, within a matter of minutes, the SWAT Team, composed of 50 to 58 highly trained and dedicated officers, arrived at the complex and surrounded the suspect; and

WHEREAS, by 11:30 A.M., the suspect, waving a white t-shirt, surrendered to the SWAT officers without incident; and

WHEREAS, the skill and expertise of the Gwinnett County Police Department brought one of Georgia's most intense and dangerous manhunts to a safe and successful close, and it is highly fitting and proper that the Uniform and Communications Divisions and SWAT Team be recognized appropriately for their outstanding bravery, sacrifice, and devotion to duty and especially for their outstanding performance on March 12, 2005.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in commending the Gwinnett County Police Department's Uniform and Communications Divisions and SWAT Team for their excellence and professionalism during the events of March 12, 2005, and their untiring dedication to protecting the lives of their fellow citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of the Gwinnett County Police Department's Uniform and Communications Divisions and SWAT Team are invited to appear before the House of Representatives for the purposes of being recognized by the House and receiving an appropriate copy of this resolution at a day and time to be set by the Speaker of the House.
