A RESOLUTION

Commending Reverend Matthew Southall Brown; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Reverend Matthew Southall Brown has long been recognized for the vital role that he has played in providing leadership and in serving the citizens of Savannah and of this state; and

WHEREAS, he has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of his community and state as evidenced dramatically by his years of superlative work as a minister, serving as pastor of the Smyrna Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia; the Historic Nicholsonboro Baptist Church in Whitebluff, Georgia; the First Royal Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina; and the Saint John Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia since 1969, and through his service with the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia; Savannah Baptist Ministers Union; Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Savannah; Prince Hall Masons; and the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, he was born in Savannah and is a graduate of A. E. Beach High School, attended Georgia State College, now Savannah State University, from 1948 to 1951, and graduated from the American Baptists School of Theology in 1961 with further studies at the Princeton Institute of Theology and the University of Miami; and

WHEREAS, he is married to Louise Williams Brown and is the father of four children and seven grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, his significant organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his sensitivities have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates; and

WHEREAS, he is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished individual be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Reverend Matthew Southall Brown for his many years of efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated service as a pastor and minister of the gospel.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Matthew Southall Brown.
