RESOLUTION
Urging
the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to include courses on
health and physical education in the required curriculum for teacher education
programs; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
obesity is a serious medical condition affecting up to one-third of all
Americans; and
WHEREAS,
education, prevention, and proper treatment of obesity can reduce health care
costs and improve the quality of life for a significant number of children in
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
teachers can play an integral role in synthesizing health and physical education
components throughout the academic curriculum in public schools;
and
WHEREAS,
the state universities and colleges which offer degrees in education have an
opportunity to include creative instruction to their teachers-in-training on
methods to integrate health and physical education components in their academic
instruction.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the Board of
Regents of the University System of Georgia is urged to include courses in
health and physical education in the required curriculum for teacher education
programs.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Chancellor
Meredith.
