RESOLUTION
Commending
Jeanne Scher as the Distinguished Senior Georgian for 2005; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Jeanne Scher was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on May 3, 1919, and has a long
history of advocacy beginning in her early years living in Connecticut and New
York; and
WHEREAS,
during those years she advocated for additional schools in her community and for
programs designed for learning disabled children; and
WHEREAS,
in 1979 she and her husband moved to Atlanta, where she became the director of
the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in DeKalb County and organized an older
womeńs
conference with Mercer University and was also employed by the Atlanta Regional
Commission, where she organized the first job fair for older workers attended by
over 1,000 people; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Scher is best known for her work with the Older
Womeńs
League (OWL) and her advocacy for older women, serving as a charter member of
the national organization and founder of the Atlanta Chapter, working tirelessly
as President/Executive Director for the local chapter and as a member of the
National Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS,
she was a founder of the
Womeńs
Health Coalition and a charter member of the Long Term Care Coalition, obtaining
grants for OWL to train volunteers about the importance of breast
self-examination and mammography, and advocated for universal health care,
prescription drug coverage, bone density screening for osteoporosis and long
term care; and
WHEREAS,
she has always been concerned about elder abuse and secured a grant to train
volunteers to speak about this issue to make people more aware of the problem of
elder abuse; and
WHEREAS,
she is still actively working in her senior community, planning educational
programs on relevant issues and encouraging the residents to vote;
and
WHEREAS,
Senior Week at the Capitol has been established to recognize the valuable
contributions older Georgians have made to our state and will be observed the
week of February 28-March 4, 2005; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Council on Aging has chosen to honor Ms. Scher as the Distinguished
Senior Georgian for 2005 in recognition of her contributions to her community
and state and the positive role model she represents for young and old
alike.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize and commend Ms. Jeanne Scher as the Distinguished Senior
Georgian for 2005.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Jeanne
Scher.
