A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the Kiwanis Club of Americus on its 85th Anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the General Assembly of Georgia recognizes the many hours of devoted service by the Kiwanis Club of Americus; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Americus was chartered on April 6, 1920, making it one of the oldest clubs in the Kiwanis International family; and

WHEREAS, the club has played an important role in the activities of the Georgia District of Kiwanis since its charter; and

WHEREAS, the club has provided three District Governors to serve the Georgia region, and numerous Lieutenant Governors to serve Division 3 of the organization; and

WHEREAS, the club annually raises money through the Americus Kiwanis Baseball Classic tournament for teams with 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14 year-old Little League ballplayers; and

WHEREAS, the club donates money each year to various important programs in the Americus community, such as Georgia Southwestern State University, South Georgia Technical College, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and local literacy programs; and

WHEREAS, club members have faithfully read to children kindergarten through grade three every Friday for many years at Southland Academy, Sumter County Primary School, and Cherokee Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, the club has sponsored the Kiwanis Pet Parade at Halloween each year for over 60 years, allowing children and their pets to dress up and celebrate the season by marching through the streets of downtown Americus; and
WHEREAS, the club has sponsored Troop 21 of the Boy Scouts of America, encouraging and assisting over 180 young men to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, presumably the most Eagle Scouts from any one troop in America.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body shows its appreciation to the Kiwanis Club of Americus for its incredible service and recognizes April 6, 2005, as "Kiwanis Club of Americus Day" throughout Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Kiwanis Club of Americus.
