RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Loring Keels Baker; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Baker began his lifelong passion for amateur boxing as a boxing champion in
his youth and went on to volunteer his time as president of the USA Amateur
Boxing Federation, secretary-general of the Association Internationale de Boxe
Amateur, and Georgia boxing commissioner; and
WHEREAS,
his legacy to the sport includes many innovations to increase safety, including
the head gear rule with which he is credited, and good sportsmanship through the
elimination of cheating and other dishonest practices, especially within Olympic
boxing; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Baker helped to shape the unparalleled 1984 Olympic Boxing Team, which won
nine gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal, the most medals ever won
by an Olympic boxing team, and also made time to help mold the character of many
disadvantaged children through his involvement in local amateur boxing;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Baker leaves behind a wealth of loving friends and family who will remember
him for his engaging manner, his high spirits, and his many passions and
talents; and
WHEREAS,
with the passing of Mr. Loring Keels Baker, the State of Georgia has lost a most
estimable citizen who exemplified the best qualities of
sportsmanship.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr.
Loring Keels Baker and extend their most sincere condolences to his
family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. Loring Keels Baker.
