RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending President Jimmy Carter on the occasion of the commissioning of
the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23); and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
President Jimmy Carter served his country with distinction, dedication, and
ability as the 39th President of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia is proud of its native son and former Governor for his
commitment to public service and the betterment of the human condition
throughout the world; and
WHEREAS,
he is a 1946 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, served as a
commissioned officer aboard submarines, and is the only President to have
qualified in submarines; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of his many outstanding accomplishments, the United States Navy
will commission its newest nuclear-powered attack submarine, the USS Jimmy
Carter (SSN-23), on February 19, 2005, in ceremonies at Naval Submarine Base New
London, Groton, Connecticut; and
WHEREAS,
the USS Jimmy Carter is the third and final submarine of the Seawolf class and
will be the fastest, quietest, most advanced, and most heavily armed submarine
in the world; and
WHEREAS,
built by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, the 12,120 ton
USS Jimmy Carter is 453 feet in length, has a beam of 40 feet, and carries a
crew of 130 officers and sailors, with provisions for additional special warfare
personnel; and
WHEREAS,
it is only fitting and proper that President Jimmy Carter be so
honored.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize and commend President Jimmy Carter on the occasion of the
commissioning of the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) and wish
God́s
speed to all who sail in her.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to President Jimmy Carter.
