RESOLUTION
Honoring
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; declaring March 9, 2005, as Delta Sigma Theta
Day; inviting representatives of the sorority to appear before this body; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded as a public service
sorority by 22 young women at Howard University; and
WHEREAS,
since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has grown to include more
than 200,000 members in more than 900 chapters located in the United States,
Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, and
the Republic of Korea; and there are more than 50 local chapters throughout the
State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
since its inception in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly established itself as
a public service organization that strives to confront the problems of African
Americans as well as all Americans through a variety of programs addressing the
issues of education, health, international development, and strengthening the
African American family; and
WHEREAS,
Delta Sigma Theta participates in a wide variety of activities that include
projects focusing on immunization, senior medication and record tracking,
Habitat for Humanity, breast cancer awareness, clinical depression information
and screening, diabetes awareness and screening, alcohol, drug abuse, AIDS, and
Delta Academy, a program directed to prepare early adolescent females with a
basic education in math, science, and technology; and
WHEREAS,
in realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of
public service through its Five-Point Program Thrust of Physical and Mental
Health, educational development, economic development, international awareness
and involvement, and political awareness and involvement; and
WHEREAS,
Delta is reaching out across the nation with diverse public service projects
which include: Delta Habitat for Humanity; Project Cherish; Project SMART; The
Delta Immunization Campaign; School America; Preparing our Sons for Manhood;
the Delta Alcohol, Drug Abuse and AIDS Community Education Project; Dr. Bettye
Shabazz Delta Academy; and Summit Five Health and Healing.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that March 9, 2005, is
declared "Delta Sigma Theta Day" in recognition of the
sororitýs
commitment to community service and the members of the Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority are invited to appear before the House of Representatives at a time to
be determined by the Speaker.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority.
