A RESOLUTION

Honoring and commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Grady County, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Grady County was created on August 17, 1905, by an Act of the Georgia General Assembly as part of the Blackburn Bill which provided for the creation of eight new counties; and was officially established on January 1, 1906; and

WHEREAS, it is named for Henry Woodfin Grady, the great American orator, journalist, and author; spokesperson for the "New South"; and editor of the Atlanta Constitution; and

WHEREAS, Grady County's 458.2 square miles of rolling terrain and fertile soil coupled with its favorable climate make it one of the richest farming areas in the nation, earning it the title "Original Diversified Farming County of the Southeast"; and

WHEREAS, the county was home to the Lower Creek tribe of Native Americans until the early 1800s, and, in the 1820s, William Hawthorne, a Baptist preacher and explorer, blazed a trail through 40 miles of wilderness to settle his family along Tired Creek near present day Cairo, which became known as the "North Carolina Settlement" and then "Calvary" in reference to the Christians who settled in this area seeking "nature's garden spot"; and

WHEREAS, today, Grady County remains a vital and important part of Georgia and a wonderful and welcoming home to many of this statés great citizens; and

WHEREAS, 2005 marks the 100th year of its existence and, on the occasion of this historical milestone, Grady County honors its proud and rich heritage with a centennial celebration.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body honors and commemorates the 100th anniversary of Grady County and extends its best wishes to each and every resident for many more years of health and prosperity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Grady County Board of Commissioners.
