A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of Wiley Lamar "Apple" Savage, late of Rabun County; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Wiley Lamar "Apple" Savage was widely acknowledged as an institution in Rabun County for his wisdom, wit, community involvement, political acumen, and family life; and

WHEREAS, the Hall County native founded WALH radio in Mountain City, served as Mayor of Clayton for eight years, was a Master Mason, and was a charter member of Carvers Chapel Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, a loyal alumnus of Lula High School, he began his radio career just after high school; and

WHEREAS, he further advanced his entertainment skills as a piano player for square dances and promoted wrestling matches and leading country and bluegrass music bands; and

WHEREAS, "Apple" Savage may be most associated with his traditional morning radio greeting "Good morning, Rabun County. Smile, the sunshine is good for your teeth!"; and

WHEREAS, he informed and entertained his listening audience reporting the news, reading local obituaries, playing gospel and bluegrass music, and giving updates of fishing contests; and

WHEREAS, The Clayton Tribune News editor, Blake Spurney, noted that longtime residents will remember "Apple" Savage as a fond and familiar personality whose voice greeted them each morning, and his loss reminds both newcomers and natives to appreciate the vanishing elements of Rabun County's unique local character; and

WHEREAS, when he passed in July of 2004, Savage left behind a legacy of friendship, family, and folklore to add to the rich annals of Rabun County history.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. Wiley Lamar "Apple" Savage and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and the Rabun County community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Wiley Lamar "Apple" Savage.
