A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending REACH for Wellness; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness is a cardiovascular disease prevention coalition sponsored by the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness with coalition members including representatives from religious institutions, community groups, health related organizations, and colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health known as REACH for Wellness is a free, community based health and wellness resource created to connect families with resources that improve cardiovascular health; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness offers programs in nutrition education, personal empowerment, smoking cessation, and physical activity and has served more than 11,837 persons; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness was recognized in the United States Department of Health and Human Services 2003 Prevention Programs in Action "Steps to a Healthier US" publication as a lead organization in improving the cardiovascular health among African Americans residing in the Atlanta Empowerment Zone; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness co-organized Poor Peoples Day at the State Capitol and statewide that addressed health disparities, the uninsured, living wages, health care, and hospital funding which was comprised of more than 350 people; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness engaged in 21 community health fairs exposing greater than 722 persons to cardiovascular disease health information; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness participated in Healthy Heart Collaborative, a pilot program targeting cardiovascular health disparities, developed by the National Minority Health Month Foundation; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness collaborated with the American Red Cross to participate in their CPR Saturday training event; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness facilitated a community REACH OUT program with 13 students from Clark Atlanta University and disseminated information about the five interventions of REACH for Wellness to more than 200 homes; and

WHEREAS, REACH for Wellness participated in Cover the Uninsured Week, a national event of week-long activities aimed at sensitizing the public and opinion leaders to the plight of the more than 41 million Americans who lack health insurance.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and commend the valuable efforts of REACH for Wellness and express their gratitude for its continued commitment to improving the health of Georgia's citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to REACH for Wellness.
