RESOLUTION
Commending
the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History, Inc.; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History, Inc.,
(ASALH) was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson on September 9, 1915;
and
WHEREAS,
the ASALH will hold its 91st annual convention in Atlanta, Georgia, on
September 26 through October 1, 2006; and
WHEREAS,
the conference will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Journal of
African-American History, formerly the Journal of Negro History;
and
WHEREAS,
the ASALH has been the premier professional association in the United States
that has promoted the history, accomplishments, contributions, and heritage of
persons of African descent since their ancestors were forcibly brought to this
country as slaves; and
WHEREAS,
the ASALH has provided valuable teaching materials used by educators from
kindergarten to graduate school which have provided invaluable documentation,
insights, and new information about African-Americans; and
WHEREAS,
the members of this body are delighted that the ASALH has chosen to hold its
annual meeting in Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Association for the Study of African-American Life and
History, Inc., for its more than nine decades of outstanding activities and
accomplishments.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Sheila
Flemming-Hunter for inclusion in the 2006 ASALH 91st convention program journal.
