A
RESOLUTION
Expressing
regret at the passing of Judge James Edwin Peavy, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia recently lost one of its finest and most distinguished
citizens with the passing of Judge James Edwin Peavy, Sr., at the age of 85 on
Tuesday, March 14, 2006; and
WHEREAS,
Judge Peavy was born on March 22, 1920, in Randolph County, Georgia, the son of
John Mackenzie Peavy and Addie Belle Peak Peavy; and
WHEREAS,
he attended Cuthbert High School, Norman Park College, the University of
Georgia, and Mercer University School of Law, from which he graduated cum laude,
and he served in the Asian-Pacific Theater during the Second World War;
and
WHEREAS,
Judge Peavy began practicing law in Waycross in 1949, and in 1989 he became
judge of the State Court of Ware County, in which office he served until 1997;
and
WHEREAS,
he was an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as deacon, general
superintendent of Sunday school, director of training union, chairman of the
personnel committee, chairman of the finance committee, chairman of the pulpit
committee, chairman of the deacons, and adult Sunday school teacher, and in 1988
he was chosen First Baptist Church man of the year; and
WHEREAS,
he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Beasley Peavy, a son, James
Edwin Peavy, Jr., a daughter, Julie Hopkins, two grandchildren, Alva Joseph
Hopkins, IV, and Melissa Ann Hopkins, a step-grandson, Jason Thomas Cornelison,
and a host of other relatives and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express regret at the passing of Judge James Edwin Peavy, Sr., and
extend condolences to his grieving family and friends.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Judge James Edwin Peavy, Sr.
