RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. Lynda Darnell Woodruff; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Lynda Darnell Woodruff has always been a champion for justice and available
and appropriate health care for all; and
WHEREAS,
as a child she integrated the segregated Lynchburg, Virginia, school system and
as a result became passionate about equal rights for everyone; and
WHEREAS,
she received her B.A. degree in 1969, earned her M.S. degree from Case Western
Reserve University in 1971, and was awarded her Ph.D. in 1984 by the College of
Education at Georgia State University; and
WHEREAS,
she moved to Atlanta in 1978 to accept a position as assistant professor of
physical therapy at Georgia State University where she founded and directed the
award-winning program for minority student recruitment and retention;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1991, Dr. Woodruff was appointed full professor with tenure and founding
chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy at North Georgia College in
Dahlonega, where she served until 1996; and
WHEREAS,
until December, 2005, she continued as a full professor at North Georgia College
and State University, where she authored more than ten grants and one funding in
excess of $1 million to sustain operations and initiate creative outreach
projects in the community; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Woodruff received numerous awards and recognitions including the APTA Lucy
Blair Award, the Kellogg Fellowship for International Leadership, the
Distinguished Service Award for the Section on Clinical Electrophysiology, and
fellow status in the American Academy of Physical Therapy;
and
WHEREAS, after receiving a gubernatorial appointment to the Georgia State Board of Physical Therapy, she served for more than ten years and oversaw controversial legislation to exclude unlicensed personnel from providing direct patient care; and

WHEREAS,
her leadership, enthusiasm, and passion for her profession is most reflected in
the organizations of which she is a founding member, including the Foundation
for Physical Therapy, the American Academy of Physical Therapy, the Georgia
Student Physical Therapy Organization, the North American Association of Laser
Therapy, the Physical Therapy Learning Institute, and the American Congress on
Electroneuromyography; and
WHEREAS,
since 1979, she has worked to build partnerships between Brazilian and United
States physical therapy institutions, implementing exchange programs for more
than 20 faculty and 12 student interns; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Woodruff's accomplishments over the course of her phenomenal career are too
extensive to enumerate, and it is only fitting and proper this body acknowledge
the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished
Georgian.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize and commend Dr. Lynda Darnell Woodruff for her dynamic
career and for her willingness to blaze new trails.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Lynda
Darnell Woodruff.
