A RESOLUTION

Commending Director Bill Hitchens of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security, recipient of the Peace Officer Association of Georgia's 2004 Arthur Hutchins Meritorious Service Award and inviting him to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in May of 2004, Director Bill Hitchens was named Executive Commander of the G-8 Public Safety Command, and he has carried out the duties and responsibilities of that office with great success, resulting in Georgia's outstanding 2004 G-8 Summit; and

WHEREAS, with approximately 10,000 public safety and Georgia National Guard personnel from within the state and a total of 77 law enforcement agencies from Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida under his quiet and effective leadership, Director Hitchens was instrumental in creating this proud moment for Georgia and the nation; and

WHEREAS, because of the professionalism and restraint displayed by the officers under his command, protesters were able to express their views freely and without disruption or danger to the deliberations of the world leaders who gathered for this summit; and

WHEREAS, with no fatalities, no serious injuries, and only 18 arrests, the 2004 G-8 Summit was an unparalleled success which will serve for years to come as the model for similar international events; and

WHEREAS, as a direct result of Director Hitchens's wise and able management, the State of Georgia was able to showcase its great hospitality, class, and charm to an international audience; and

WHEREAS, in honor of this great achievement and his exceptional career in law enforcement, Director Hitchens has been selected as recipient of the Peace Officer Association of Georgia's 2004 Arthur Hutchins Meritorious Service Award.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in commending Director Bill Hitchens of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security upon receiving the Peace Officer Association of Georgia's 2004 Arthur Hutchins Meritorious Service Award and extend their sincere appreciation for the great success of the 2004 G-8 Summit held on Sea Island, Georgia, and for his many years of dedicated service protecting the citizens of the state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Director Bill Hitchens of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security is invited to the House of Representatives for purposes of being recognized by the House and receiving an appropriate copy of this resolution at a date and time to be fixed by the Speaker of the House.
