A RESOLUTION

Commending Taiwan on its contributions to the global economy, the promotion of world peace, freedom, and human rights and supporting its efforts to join the World Health Organization and other international organizations as well as efforts to enter into a free trade agreement with the United States; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Taiwan and the United States of America are long standing friends and allies, both cherishing the commonly shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and

WHEREAS, Taiwan is the world's 16th largest economy, America's 8th largest trading partner, and the 5th largest market for U. S. agricultural products; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia and Taiwan have enjoyed stable and mutually beneficial sister-state relations since 1984 with a prospect of further growth; and

WHEREAS, Taiwan was Georgia's 11th largest export market in 2005, reaching $400.7 million; and

WHEREAS, the state of Georgia supports a free trade agreement between the United States and Taiwan; and

WHEREAS, Taiwan is a leading manufacturer of information technology products and an indispensable provider for the global high-tech industry; and

WHEREAS, Taiwan's peace and stability are not only vital to the Asian Pacific region but to the world economy; and

WHEREAS, the military forces of Taiwan and the United States have had a cooperative relationship over the years; and
WHEREAS, Taiwan is a willing and contributing member of the world community and is one of the most active foreign contributors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters in 2005; and

WHEREAS, the 23 million free citizens of Taiwan are not represented in the World Health Organization and other important international organizations, hindering the fundamental human rights of the Taiwanese people; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative for Taiwan to participate in the activities of the World Health Organization for the sake of global health, particularly in light of threatening epidemic diseases such as SARS, bird flu, and others.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body commends and supports the efforts of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to join the World Health Organization and other international organizations as well as its efforts to join in a free trade agreement with the United States.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. R. C. Wu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta.
