House Resolution 2076

A RESOLUTION

Commending Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough, Senior Pastor of Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough was born in the Summerhill neighborhood of southwest Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, he is a graduate of Morris Brown College and the Gammon Seminary of the Interdenominational Theological Center; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Kimbrough has served as a friend and pastor for 40 years for congregations in Chicago and Atlanta where he has helped to lead churches through racial transitions; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. Kimbrough's leadership, Cascade United Methodist Church has grown to approximately 7,000 members and has become a light in the metro Atlanta community; and

WHEREAS, he has been active on numerous boards in the United Methodist Church and the community, including the United Methodist Publishing Board, the Board of Ordained Ministry (North Georgia Conference), and Houston-Tillotson Board of Trustees; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Kimbrough has been awarded numerous awards and honorary degrees from many organizations, including the Chairman's Award from the Convocation for Pastors of African-American Churches, the Philips Award from the National Association of United Methodist Evangelists, the Bridge Building Award from Atlanta Technical College, the Derman Award for Excellence in Evangelism, the John Wesley Clergy Award, and three honorary doctorate degrees; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Kimbrough is the author of the book Nothing is Impossible and is a contributor to the volumes 365 Meditations for Men and 365 Meditations for Families; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Kimbrough is retiring on June 30, 2006.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that members of this body commend the Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough for his outstanding leadership, evangelism, pastorates, and lifetime of contributions to the ministry of the United Methodist Church and bringing thousands of souls to Christ.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough.
