By: Representatives Drenner of the 86th, Reese of the 98th, Gardner of the 57th, and Thomas of the 100th

A RESOLUTION

Urging electric utilities to consider sustaining a 10 percent renewable portfolio standard before building new nuclear power plants in Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, virtually all new power plants built in Georgia in the last 15 years are fueled by natural gas, thereby exposing electricity consumers to volatile price fluctuations; and

WHEREAS, renewable energy is a more cost-effective and practical means to generate electricity such that it should be considered before nuclear power plants are built or expanded; and

WHEREAS, utilizing renewable resources will cost ratepayers less, diversify the fuel mix, reduce the demand for natural gas, benefit ratepayers in Georgia, and positively impact Georgiás economy; and

WHEREAS, a 10 percent renewable portfolio standard would provide an economic stimulus of over $2 billion in new capital investments and annually generate over $1 billion in new revenues to rural Georgiás farmers and foresters directly enhancing Georgiás economy, creating local fuel resources and thereby diversifying the fuel mix, and reducing dependence on energy supplies from unstable parts of the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge electric utilities in Georgia to consider sustaining a 10 percent renewable portfolio standard in order to benefit the citizens and economy of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body urge the Public Service Commission to take appropriate measures to assist Georgia utilities in sustaining 10 percent renewable portfolio standards.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Georgia electric utility companies and to each member of the Georgia Public Service Commission.
