A
RESOLUTION
Urging
Congress to enact measures to redesign Social Security cards so that they are
more difficult to copy and so that their authenticity may be more accurately
determined; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
it is the responsibility of the federal government to manage immigration to the
United States; and
WHEREAS,
large numbers of people living in Georgia have caused many challenges for state
and local governments, severely taxing the resources of many municipalities and
in some cases causing a great strain on law enforcement agencies;
and
WHEREAS,
the United States Department of Homeland
Securitýs
most recent budget was $43 billion, a sum that dwarfs all the funds that the
State of Georgia and the
statés
local governments could ever afford to spend combating the problems of illegal
immigration that have not been adequately addressed by the federal government;
and
WHEREAS,
one fairly easy measure the federal government could take to combat the influx
of illegal immigrants would be to address the fact that Social Security cards
used to secure employment can be easily forged by even a novice at a home
computer; and
WHEREAS,
a 21st Century Social Security Card that is difficult to copy and whose
authenticity could be readily ascertained would be a reasonable and
cost-effective approach to helping employers to only hire persons authorized to
work in the United States, thus serving as a major deterrent to all who would
cross our
natiońs
borders to take jobs here illegally.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body urge Congress to enact measures to redesign Social Security cards so
that they are more difficult to copy and so that their authenticity may be more
accurately determined.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to each member
of the Georgia Congressional delegation.
