RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring Honorable James Marvin Floyd, Sr., former member of the House of
Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Honorable James Marvin "Jimmy" Floyd, Sr., former member of the House of
Representatives, passed away on March 10, 2006, at the age of 73, leaving a
tremendous void in the hearts of all who knew and loved this most extraordinary
Georgian; and
WHEREAS,
a 1949 graduate of Bradwell Institute and a 1956 graduate of the Georgia
Institute of Technology, Mr. Floyd served his country honorably as a member of
the United States Army during the Korean Conflict; and
WHEREAS,
for nearly 40 years, Mr. Floyd was employed by Heritage Bank, serving as
president and chairman of the board for over two decades and serving as the
chairman of the board of the bank's holding company, Liberty Shares, Inc., until
his death; and
WHEREAS,
a native and lifelong resident of Liberty County, Mr. Floyd devoted much of his
life to serving his beloved community in a variety of prominent leadership
positions, including as a member of the Flemington City Council from 1960 to
1984 and as member of the Liberty County Board of Commissioners from 1971 to
1985, where he served as chairman from 1979 to 1985; and
WHEREAS,
he was also a member of the Coastal Area Planning and Development Commission and
chairman of the Liberty County Industrial Authority, in addition to his active
involvement in a variety of other community organizations; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Floyd was a distinguished member of this body from 1985 to 1995, during
which time he gained the immense respect of his colleagues for his vision,
integrity, and unwavering dedication to his district and his state; and
WHEREAS,
a devout Christian, Mr. Floyd was a member, elder, and trustee of Flemington
Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school for over four decades;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Floyd is survived by a loving and devoted family, including his wife of 51
years, Carolyn Martin Floyd; his son and daughter-in-law, James M. "Jim" Floyd,
Jr., and Alicia Floyd; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen F. and Clayton Boyer;
his five grandchildren, Meghann Floyd, Nicki B. Davis, Ross Floyd, Nicholas
Boyer, and Evanne Floyd; two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Aleah Davis; his
sister and brother-in-law, Claire F. and Fred Gunter; and his two brothers and
sister-in-law, Billy Floyd and Carroll and Billie Floyd; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia has lost a most estimable citizen and one of its most exceptional public
servants and community leaders with the passing of Mr. James Marvin Floyd,
Sr.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in remembering and honoring the life of their most esteemed
former colleague, Honorable James Marvin Floyd, Sr., in expressing their
greatest sorrow at his passing, and in extending their most sincere condolences
to his family and friends.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Carolyn
Martin Floyd.
