A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the State Board of Technical and Adult Education and the Department of Technical
and Adult Education to establish a technical college in Riverdale, Georgia; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Clayton County has a high dropout rate, a high unemployment rate of 6.4 percent,
a high density population, and a high rate of single mother households;
and
WHEREAS,
the high impact of the loss of jobs due to the bankruptcy of Delta Airlines and
the closing of the Hapeville Ford Plant will have a devastating impact on
Clayton County; and
WHEREAS,
improved access to technical education for the citizens of Riverdale, Clayton
County, and bordering communities would help to provide broader career
opportunities for its citizens to help alleviate some of these negative aspects;
and
WHEREAS,
in the state system of technical education established by the State Board of
Technical and Adult Education, Riverdale is currently served by Griffin
Technical College; and
WHEREAS,
impediments such as lack of public transportation in the area make it difficult
for many citizens of Riverdale to attend Griffin Technical College;
and
WHEREAS,
it would be highly beneficial to the citizens of Riverdale, Clayton County, and
bordering communities to have a technical college within close proximity to
serve their needs; and
WHEREAS,
such programs as the Georgia Fatherhood Program, the Tech Prep Program, and the
Business Incubator Program would provide unique opportunities for citizens of
the area and would not overlap or compete with programs offered at neighboring
technical colleges; and
WHEREAS,
continued economic growth and skilled labor will help attract industry to
Clayton County and to Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the establishment of partnerships between local, state, and federal governments
and with private companies and other entities would be extremely beneficial in
obtaining funding and support for such a technical college.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the State Board
of Technical and Adult Education and the Department of Technical and Adult
Education are urged to establish a technical college in Riverdale, Georgia, to
provide improved access to technical education for the citizens of Riverdale
through such programs as the Georgia Fatherhood Program, the Tech Prep Program,
and the Business Incubator Program.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it is strongly urged that partnerships between local,
state, and federal governments and with private companies and other entities be
established to encourage funding for such a technical college.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Commissioner
Mike Vollmer.
