RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Mrs. Lumumba Laila Majied; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Lumumba Laila Majied was born as LeRay Sylvia Moore on March 20, 1954, in
Baltimore, Maryland, where she spent most of her childhood; and
WHEREAS,
after living in San Francisco from the age of 14, Mrs. Majied moved to Atlanta
in 1971 to attend Spelman College, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from
Georgia State University in 1988; and
WHEREAS,
a devout Muslim, Mrs. Majied became involved with the Nation of Islam when she
was 17 before embracing Al-Islam in 1975; and
WHEREAS,
during her many years as a resident of Atlanta, Mrs. Majied was a highly active
and respected member of her community, and among her many accomplishments are
her cofounding of Dua'Afe, a midwifery organization, and Faiz Health Institute,
her service as chief editor of
Health News
Magazine, and her organization of numerous
events at the Atlanta Masjid, among many other activities; and
WHEREAS,
after marrying Mr. Naeem Majied in 1999, she moved to Oakland, California, where
she became a distinguished part of that city's Muslim community, becoming active
in the Shahadatain Institute, an Islamic education program, and founding a book
club called Women Who Read and Do Good Works; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Majied leaves behind a loving and devoted family, including her husband,
Naeem Majied; her daughter, Zenobia Day; her grandchildren, Issa Day-Simmons and
Luqman Jihad; her sisters, Cynthia Herman, Hilda Vareen, and Stacy Wood; her
brothers, Keith Moore, Barry Moore, and Anthony Moore; her mother, Ann E.
Moore-Braga; her stepdaughters, Marquita Myers, Maia Jackson, and Kefela
Jackson; and a host of other relatives;
and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Majied's passing on December 27, 2005, is a great loss for the many people who knew and loved this long-time resident of Georgia.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mrs.
Lumumba Laila Majied and extend their most sincere condolences to her family and
friends.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Naeem
Majied.
