A
RESOLUTION
Congratulating
the "We the People: The Citizen and The Constitution" state contest winners from
Lakeside High School and inviting them to appear before the House of
Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the advanced placement United States government class from Lakeside High School
in DeKalb County has won the "We the People: The Citizen and The Constitution"
state competition and will represent Georgia on the national level this April;
and
WHEREAS,
sponsored by the Center for Civic Education, the "We the People" program was
founded in 1987 as a way to promote civic competence and responsibility among
the nation's primary and secondary students, culminating in a challenging
competition for high school students; and
WHEREAS,
since its inception, more than 28 million students and 90,000 educators have
participated in this innovative curriculum that fosters a greater understanding
of the institutions of American constitutional democracy; and
WHEREAS,
at the state competition, 28 Lakeside High School students, led by their
teacher, Mr. Rick Barbe, were triumphant after demonstrating their impressive
knowledge of the foundations and principles of the United States Constitution
and the Bill of Rights; and
WHEREAS,
when they compete at the national competition in Washington, D.C., these bright
scholars will continue to demonstrate their civic understanding by presenting
statements and answering questions related to the Constitution and American
government before a mock congressional hearing; and
WHEREAS,
the Lakeside High School "We the People" contest winners have brought great
honor to their school and community with their vast expertise on this most vital
subject matter, and Georgia is very proud that it will be represented by such a
stellar group of students.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in congratulating the "We the People: The Citizen and The
Constitution" contest winners from Lakeside High School and extend their very
best wishes for success at the national competition in Washington,
D.C.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the "We the People: The Citizen and The Constitution"
state contest winners from Lakeside High School and their teacher, Mr. Rick
Barbe, are invited to appear before the House of Representatives for purposes of
being recognized by the House and receiving appropriate copies of this
resolution at a date and time to be fixed by the Speaker of the House.
