RESOLUTION
Honoring
the memory of George D. Busbee, former Governor of Georgia, and designating the
Georgia Public Safety Training Center as the "George D. Busbee Georgia Public
Safety Training Center"; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
from 1975 to 1983, Governor George D. Busbee led the State of Georgia with
integrity and vision; and
WHEREAS,
born on August 7, 1927, in Dooly County, Governor Busbee served his country with
honor as a member of the United States Navy before embarking on a successful
legal career; and
WHEREAS,
he first entered public office in 1956 as a member of the Georgia House of
Representatives, where he served for 18 years, including eight years as majority
leader; and
WHEREAS,
elected as Governor in 1974, he was the first Georgia chief executive to serve
two consecutive four-year terms; and
WHEREAS,
while in office, Governor Busbee always lived up to his campaign slogan,"A
workhorse, not a showhorse," leading the state with efficiency and moderation;
and
WHEREAS,
Governor Busbee guided Georgians through two recessions while keeping his
commitment to low taxes, thanks to his leadership on the
statés
budget and his business acumen; and
WHEREAS,
Governor Busbee will always be remembered for his foresight on the importance of
high technology companies and international trade, helping to create a
business-friendly environment that attracted to Georgia investors from across
the United States and the world; one of the first governors to travel abroad to
solicit business, Governor
Busbeés
efforts increased the number of international businesses in the state from 150
in 1975 to 680 in 1982; and
WHEREAS,
Governor Busbee also spearheaded the move for much-needed constitutional reform,
winning legislative approval of a new state Constitution in 1982;
and
WHEREAS,
among the many accomplishments of his tenure, Governor Busbee addressed prison
overcrowding, helped control Medicaid costs, established a state-wide
kindergarten program, and oversaw the completion of the original interstate
highway program; and
WHEREAS,
above all, Governor
Busbeés
time in office was guided by his great love of the State of Georgia, and he
always remained completely committed to doing all he could to improve the lives
of all of his fellow citizens; and
WHEREAS,
Governor Busbee died on July 16, 2004, and Georgia will always remember him for
his strong leadership, impeccable character, and dedication to public service;
and
WHEREAS,
considering the invaluable role Governor Busbee played in shaping the future of
our state, it would be a most fitting tribute to his important legacy to name
the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, a facility dedicated to
comprehensive training of state and local public safety personnel, in his
honor.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the members of
this body honor the memory of George D. Busbee and remember his outstanding
contributions to Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, in recognition of his important leadership as
governor, the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, located in Forsyth,
Georgia, is hereinafter designated as the "George D. Busbee Georgia Public
Safety Training Center," and the Georgia Public Safety Training Center is
authorized and directed to place and maintain appropriate signs so designating
such facility.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the family of
Governor George D. Busbee and to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.
