House Resolution 1326

A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of Mr. Henry Hugh Logan, Sr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Georgia lost one of its most distinguished public servants last year with the passing of Mr. Henry Hugh Logan, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Logan served on the Clarke County Board of Commissioners from 1958 to 1970 and served as president of the Association of County Commissioners in 1969; and

WHEREAS, he served on the Governor's Committee on Housing under Governor Maddox and as a member of the Georgia Water Control Board under Governor Sanders; and

WHEREAS, from 1970 to 1986, he served with distinction as a member of this body, where he was a member of the House Committee on Appropriations and the House Committee on Banks and Banking, as well as vice chairman of the House Committee on the University System; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure in the House of Representatives, Mr. Logan consistently championed causes on behalf of public education and the University System; among his many achievements, he authored legislation providing state incentives to encourage more qualified science and math teachers, sponsored legislation that created new scholarships for the University System, was instrumental in efforts to expand Athens Tech, co-authored legislation providing for commemorative college and university license plates, and led legislative efforts that gave full retirement benefits to University of Georgia custodial and food service personnel; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Logan served on the Athens-Clarke County Board of Commissioners from 1990 to 2002; and

WHEREAS, he was a founding member of the Athens Home Builders Association and was heavily involved with his community as a member of the Prince Avenue Baptist Church, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, the Athens Country Club, and the Gridiron Society of the University of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Logan, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, was a merchant in the Normaltown area for over 50 years, where he was affectionately known as the unofficial "Mayor of Normaltown"; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Logan leaves behind a loving and devoted family, including his wife, the former Georgia Elizabeth Bailey, and his three children, Hank, Beverly, and Bob; and

WHEREAS, as a leader, husband, father, and friend, Mr. Logan will always be fondly remembered for his integrity, kindness, and generous spirit, and he will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know this most estimable gentleman.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. Henry Hugh Logan, Sr., and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Georgia Logan.
