A
RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Dr. Arthur Herndon Shaw; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Arthur Herndon Shaw was born on April 25, 1937, to Arthur and Eliza Shaw;
and
WHEREAS,
a native of Moultrie, Georgia, Dr. Shaw received a bachelor's of science degree
from Tuskegee Institute in 1957, a masters of music education from Vandercook
College in 1970, and a doctorate of education degree from Nova Southeastern
University in 1980; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Shaw combined his two great passions, music and teaching, in a distinguished
career that included service as coordinator of fine arts and director of bands
at T. W. Josey High School and director of bands at Glenn Hills High School and
A. R. Johnson Junior High School; he also taught at Paine College and Augusta
College as an adjunct professor of music and retired as the director of School
Social Work for the Richmond County Board of Education; and
WHEREAS,
a highly gifted vocalist, Dr. Shaw performed on the Eddie Fisher Show in 1953,
with Helen Hayes at Franklin Roosevelt's Little White House in 1954, at the
Metropolitan Opera House in 1955, and at Radio City Music Hall for five weeks in
1958; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Shaw was a greatly respected and admired member of his community who for
several years served as the choir director at Bethel A.M.E. Church;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Shaw leaves behind a loving and devoted family, including his wife of 46
years, Yvonne J. Shaw; his daughters and son-in-law, Tara D. Burns and KiKi Shaw
and Leon R. Avera; his sister and brother-in-law, LaRosa and James Pinder; his
seven grandchildren, Michael Jones, Herndon Burns, Mercedes Avera, James Burns,
Pepse Collier, Jasmine Avera, and Parrish L. Avera; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia lost a most estimable citizen on February 4, 2006, with the passing of
Dr. Arthur Herndon Shaw.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Dr.
Arthur Herndon Shaw and extend their most sincere condolences to his
family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Yvonne J.
Shaw.
