A RESOLUTION

Commending the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the courageous members of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services tirelessly strive to protect each and every one of its citizens in times of distress; and

WHEREAS, the department is led by some of the finest chief officers in Georgia, including Chief Jack Krakeel, Director of Fire and Emergency Services, and Deputy Chiefs Thomas Bartlett and Allen McCullough; Captain Pete Nelms ably serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator; and

WHEREAS, the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services responded to over 6,100 emergency calls in 2005 and prides itself on having one of the fastest response times in the Atlanta area, averaging 5.22 minutes; and

WHEREAS, on January 2, 2006, the capabilities of this department were put to the test by a strong tornado that ravaged several areas in the county; and

WHEREAS, for each of the many calls the 911 center received on that dramatic day, and even for affected neighborhoods that went unreported to authorities, such as the River Oaks subdivision, the members of the department responded heroically and swiftly, aiding homeowners by providing medical attention, damage assessment, Red Cross assistance, and engineering services from the Town of Tyrone and by securing utilities and homes to prevent further damage; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Fayette County are very fortunate to have such a professional, valiant, and dedicated emergency services department that is always prepared to go above and beyond the call of duty when a crisis strikes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in commending the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services for their heroic work and thank all of its members for their many contributions to the safety of Georgia's citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
