RESOLUTION
Commending
Lonice C. Barrett; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Lonice C. Barrett has long been recognized by everyone associated with state and
local government as a dedicated and enthusiastic leader who has made it his
personal mission to sustain, enhance, protect, and conserve the natural,
historic, and cultural resources of this state; and
WHEREAS,
his ethical and enlightened stewardship as commissioner of natural resources and
unparalleled work ethic epitomizes perfectly the ideal and true spirit of public
service; and
WHEREAS,
his candescent career with the Department of Natural Resources spanned an
unprecedented 32 years during which time he served superbly as commissioner
since 1995 on behalf of Governor Zell Miller, Governor Roy Barnes, and Governor
Sonny Perdue; and
WHEREAS,
he is of a naturally quiet and retiring disposition and has placed himself into
a position demanding the most public of performances, and his mastering of the
substantive aspects of all environmental matters brought an unmatched expertise
to this body and to the operation and administration of the Department of
Natural Resources; and
WHEREAS,
the members of this body, and in particular those who worked closely with him
on so many conservation, natural resources, wildlife, and government reform
matters, admire his consistently thorough consideration of issues, and his
integrity and reliability rightfully earned him our honor, respect, and trust;
and
WHEREAS,
in 2004, he was appointed by Governor Perdue to spearhead implementation of the
recommendations of the Commission for a New Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
his leadership of these government reformation initiatives has resulted in the
immediate savings of millions of taxpayer dollars and will result in the
long-term savings of hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars; and
WHEREAS,
he consistently demonstrated a solid commitment to the careful study of
sensitive issues and proposed solutions and quickly developed a reputation as an
equitable, impartial leader whose decisions were governed by the rules of
honesty and fair play and whose actions were marked by unmatched dignity, grace,
and wisdom; and
WHEREAS,
his unparalleled organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience
and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his acute sensitivity to the needs
of the citizens of his community and state have earned him the respect and
admiration of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be recognized appropriately.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the members of
this body commend Lonice C. Barrett for the three and one-half decades of
effective, efficient, unselfish, and dedicated service that he has rendered on
behalf of Georgia; extend to him their utmost appreciation for his having so
purely and truly defined for others the meaning of public servant; and offer to
him their most sincere best wishes for continued health and
happiness.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Lonice C.
Barrett.
