A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Georgia, on the celebration of its 90th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on June 12, 1915, the Board of Trustees of the University of Georgia approved the start of a school of journalism at the university; and

WHEREAS, Steadman V. Sanford was the young English professor who proposed starting the school, and he went on to become dean of the university, then president, and in 1935 chancellor of the University System of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, on June 12, 1921, at the suggestion of Professor Sanford, the Board of Trustees changed the name of the school to the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism; and

WHEREAS, in 1922, John E. Drewry started at the school as an instructor of journalism and rose through the ranks to become dean, setting the foundation for excellence for other faculty to follow; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, the school was elevated to college status, and Grady College alumni continue to be ranked at the top of their professions and are known for excellence in journalism, advertising, telecommunications and broadcast news, public relations, and news media.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body congratulate the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Georgia, on the celebration of its 90th anniversary and wish the school and its faculty and students continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the dean of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Georgia.
