BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
AN ACT
To
amend Code Section 20-2-310 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating
to student directory information, registering to vote and with selective
service, and the pledge of allegiance, so as to require the State Board of
Education to annually notify secondary students and their parents of their right
under federal law to opt out of providing student information for purposes of
military recruitment; to provide for a short title; to provide for related
matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
BE
IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
SECTION
1.
This
Act shall be known and may be cited as the
"Parentś
Right to Know Act."
SECTION
2.
Code
Section 20-2-310 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to student
directory information, registering to vote and with selective service, and the
pledge of allegiance, is amended by striking subsection (a) and inserting in its
place the following:
"(a)(1)
Any public school at the secondary level which provides access to the campus or
to student directory information to persons or groups which make students aware
of occupational or educational options shall provide access to the campus and
student directory information on at least the same basis to official recruiting
representatives of the military forces of the state and the United States for
the purpose of informing students of educational and career opportunities
available in the military.
(2)
The State Board of Education shall provide annual notice to all public secondary
school students and their parents of their right under Section 9528 of the
federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (P. L. 107-110) to request that the
student́s
name, address, and telephone listing not be released for purposes of military
recruitment without prior written parental
consent."
SECTION
3.
All
laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
