Atlanta– Representative Bobby Parham (D-Milledgeville),
Chairman of the House Motor Vehicles Committee, has been named Chairman
of the House Truck and Highway Safety Study Committee by House Speaker
Terry Coleman (D-Eastman). The committee, which was created during the
2004 session of the General Assembly, is charged with studying the conditions,
needs and issues relating to highway crashes in Georgia involving large
trucks.
“ Georgia 's population has grown dramatically in the past decade and
the trucking industry has played a vital role in this growth. As a result,
we have increased traffic and accidents on our highways with both cars
and trucks,” said Parham. “We are going to take a close look at the contributing
factors of these accidents and determine if any legislation is needed
to improve safety on our highways.”
Trucks were involved in 20,837 or 6.4% of the 327,774 highway crashes
in Georgia in 2002. “Although trucks are involved in a small percentage
of highway incidents and the trucking industry in Georgia is very active
in promoting highway safety issues and initiatives, it remains incumbent
upon the Legislature to look at all possible areas of improvement in
highway safety”
In addition to serving as Chairman of the House Motor Vehicles Committee,
Rep. Parham serves on the Appropriations Committee and the Budget Subcommittee,
and Rules Committee.
