Atlanta –State Representative Bill Hembree
(R-Douglasville) was on hand at the State Capitol today as Governor Sonny
Perdue signed HB 1410, which passed the General Assembly earlier this year,
into state law.
The legislation, authored by Rep. Hembree, would extend a state income
tax exemption to help organ donors recoup some of their expenses relating
to the operation. The new law will allow persons donating items such
as bone marrow, a kidney, and other body parts to claim a state income
tax exemption of up to $10,000 for costs due to travel, lodging, and
lost wages.
“I would like to thank all my colleagues and especially the Governor
for helping to make this legislation possible,” Rep. Hembree said. “The
people who choose to donate a part of themselves to help others make
a truly noble, and loving sacrifice. I believe that we, as a state, should
encourage such action, and help those who choose to donate their organs
to help another. HB 1410 is a good step in that direction.”
Rep. Hembree serves on the House Health and Ecology Committee. He also
serves on the House Appropriations, and Higher Education Committees.
