A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell and inviting them to
1- 2 appear before the House of Representatives; and for other
1- 3 purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell have been selected by
1- 5 the American Forest Foundation as the 1999 National Tree
1- 6 Farmer of the Year based on the excellence of Charlane
1- 7 Plantation in Twiggs County; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, Charlane Plantation is also the only tree farm in
1- 9 Georgia that has been twice selected by the Georgia Forestry
1-10 Association as the Georgia Tree Farm of the Year, first in
1-11 1990 and again in 1998; and
1-12 WHEREAS, the prestigious award recognizes the excellent
1-13 stewardship which Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell have
1-14 implemented in managing their family run 2000 acre tree
1-15 farm; and
1-16 WHEREAS, the tree farm was first established in the 1920s by
1-17 Rose Lane's grandparents; and
1-18 WHEREAS, over the past 20 years, Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell
1-19 have operated the tree farm for a variety of purposes
1-20 including wildlife management, recreation, and water and
1-21 wood resources; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Chuck Leavell, as passionate about his tree farming
1-23 as he is about music, is known as the "Rock and Roll Tree
1-24 Farmer" for his diverse management of Charlane Plantation
1-25 while playing keyboard for the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton,
1-26 the Allman Brothers, and other music groups; and
1-27 WHEREAS, Chuck Leavell is the spokesman of the Georgia
1-28 Forestry Association and was active in the passage of
1-29 Amendment 3 in 1990 to help keep Georgia green as well as
1-30 the roll-out of the "Georgia: We Grow Trees Campaign"; and
1-31 WHEREAS, Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell are members of the
1-32 Georgia Forestry Association, the Isaah Walton League, the
1-33 Georgia Conservancy, Quail Unlimited, Georgia Wildlife
1-34 Federation, as well as many other organizations; and

2- 1 WHEREAS, Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell have additionally been
2- 2 recognized by the Soil and Water Conservation Service, the
2- 3 Georgia Wildlife Federation, the National Arbor Day
2- 4 Foundation, the Nature Conservancy, and the Georgia Outdoor
2- 5 Writers Association.
2- 6 WHEREAS, Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell have been active in
2- 7 Project Learning Tree, an environmental education program,
2- 8 as well as being gracious hosts for various groups and
2- 9 providing hunting opportunities on their tree farm.
2-10 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
2-11 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and
2-12 heartily commend Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell for their
2-13 outstanding achievements as pro-active land managers,
2-14 including their selection as the 1999 National Tree Farmer
2-15 of the Year, and for their exemplary contributions to the
2-16 citizens of Twiggs County, this state, and our nation.
2-17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Chuck and Rose Lane Leavell are
2-18 invited to appear before the House of Representatives on
2-19 Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at a time designated by the
2-20 Speaker of the House of Representatives.
2-21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2-22 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2-23 appropriate copy of this resolution to Chuck and Rose Lane
2-24 Leavell.
