A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
1- 1 To amend Code Section 20-2-306 of the Official Code of
1- 2 Georgia Annotated, relating to the honors program and
1- 3 residential high school program operated by the state Board
1- 4 of Education, so as to provide that students who live in
1- 5 Georgia but attend private high school outside of Georgia
1- 6 may participate in the honors program if they otherwise
1- 7 qualify; to provide for related matters; to repeal
1- 8 conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
1- 9 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
1-10 SECTION 1.
1-11 Code Section 20-2-306 of the Official Code of Georgia
1-12 Annotated, relating to the honors program and residential
1-13 high school program operated by the state Board of
1-14 Education, is amended by striking subsection (a) and
1-15 inserting in lieu thereof a new subsection (a) to read as
1-16 follows:
1-17 "(a) The State Board of Education is authorized to
1-18 inaugurate an honors program for students in the public
1-19 and private high schools of this state and for students
1-20 who reside full time in this state but attend private
1-21 school outside of this state who have manifested
1-22 exceptional abilities or unique potentials or who have
1-23 made exceptional academic achievements. This program
1-24 shall be conducted during summer months between normal
1-25 school-year terms at institutions of higher learning or
1-26 other appropriate centers within this state with
1-27 facilities adequate to provide challenging opportunities
1-28 for advanced study and accomplishments by such students.
1-29 The student honors program shall be implemented and
1-30 operated in accordance with criteria established by the
1-31 state board, and operating costs shall be paid by the
1-32 state board from funds made available for this purpose by
1-33 the General Assembly. The state board is authorized to
1-34 enter into cooperative agreements with the Board of

2- 1 Regents of the University System of Georgia for operating
2- 2 and sharing the costs of such programs."
2- 3 SECTION 2.
2- 4 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
2- 5 repealed.
