                        A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 
                               AN ACT 
 
 
  1- 1  To amend Code Section 20-2-188 of the Official Code of 
  1- 2  Georgia Annotated, relating to student transportation, so as 
  1- 3  to prohibit students from riding school buses while 
  1- 4  standing; to provide for related matters; to repeal 
  1- 5  conflicting laws; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 6       BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: 
 
  1- 7                           SECTION 1. 
 
  1- 8  Code Section 20-2-188 of the Official Code of Georgia 
  1- 9  Annotated, relating to student transportation, is amended by 
  1-10  striking subsection (e) and inserting in lieu thereof a new 
  1-11  subsection to read as follows: 
 
  1-12    "(e) The State Board of Education shall establish and 
  1-13    require adherence to minimum specifications for vehicles 
  1-14    used or contracted to be used by local units of 
  1-15    administration for transporting students, taking into 
  1-16    account the factors and circumstances set forth in 
  1-17    subsection (a) of this Code section, and shall establish 
  1-18    and require adherence to minimum standards and 
  1-19    requirements respecting maintenance, repair, inspection, 
  1-20    and use of such vehicles and minimum qualifications for 
  1-21    the drivers of such vehicles. The state board shall 
  1-22    require, monitor, and fund a program of safety instruction 
  1-23    in the practices of safe riding and emergency bus 
  1-24    evacuation drills for both school bus drivers and students 
  1-25    riding school buses. In no event shall students be allowed 
  1-26    to ride a school bus while standing." 
 
  1-27                           SECTION 2. 
 
  1-28  All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are
