Bob Irvin is the Republican Leader in the Georgia House of Representatives. He represents the 45th House District, which includes the Buckhead and Sandy Springs portions of Fulton County.
Bob grew up in rural North Fulton County, where his father was a country veterinarian. He is a graduate of the Lovett School (Valedictorian, Class of 1966), the College of William and Mary, Emory Law School, and Harvard Business School. Professionally, he is a senior partner in a major international consulting firm, giving business strategy and organization advice to senior executive teams of Fortune 500 companies. He has been a management consultant since 1980, and prior to that he practiced law in Roswell and Atlanta. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Historical Society.
Elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1972, Bob was Republican Caucus Chairman 1976-78, then left voluntarily to attend Harvard Business School. He was elected again to the House in a special election in 1993, and was elected Republican Leader in 1994. He was re-elected to the House without opposition in 1994, 1996, and 1998, and was re-elected Leader in 1996 and 1998. He is the first person to be re-elected as Republican
Leader since 1988.
In the legislature, Bob is best known for leading the passage of welfare reform in the House, over the opposition of the Democratic leadership. He is a strong and consistent advocate of lower taxes, and is the main proponent of a plan to phase out the state income tax. He is also especially known for his work on educational, criminal justice, and ethics issues. He was selected by Georgia Trend in 1998 as one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians.
Bob's wife Lynn, who grew up in Virginia, is a cum laude graduate of Mercer Law School. Bob and Lynn live in Buckhead, where they are members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church.
