A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Commending the Georgia Peaches on winning the 1996 Senior
1- 2 Softball-USA World Championship tournament; and for other
1- 3 purposes.
1- 4 WHEREAS, the Georgia Peaches brought national attention and
1- 5 fame to their state and communities by winning the 1996
1- 6 Senior Softball-USA World Championship tournament at
1- 7 Phoenix, Arizona, on October 13, 1996; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, the Senior World Championship slow pitch tournament
1- 9 is an exciting, nationwide contest among teams composed of
1-10 men age 65 and older; and
1-11 WHEREAS, the Georgia Peaches are members of the 12-team
1-12 Gwinnett-DeKalb Senior Softball League whose considerable
1-13 talent, stamina, and moxie are matched only by their
1-14 incredible zest for the game; and
1-15 WHEREAS, these senior softballers claimed their first
1-16 national title after emerging victorious from a rigorous set
1-17 of preliminaries and a grueling series of three final games
1-18 played on the last day in 100-degree heat; and
1-19 WHEREAS, their motivation, perseverance, and remarkable
1-20 resilience have made them a team that is exciting to watch,
1-21 and their enjoyment of each other and this fabulous sport is
1-22 readily apparent regardless of the score; and
1-23 WHEREAS, the team manager and catcher is Jim Carr of
1-24 Norcross, and fellow players include outfielders Curtis
1-25 Caldwell of Duluth, Angelo Mercurio of Thomaston, Bobby
1-26 Hines of Smyrna, Dean Holland of Gainesville, Buster Harris
1-27 of Social Circle, Harold Carlsen of Stone Mountain, and
1-28 George McKie of North Augusta, South Carolina; infielders
1-29 Les Boswell of Morrow, Ray Bearden of Conyers, Roy Sims of
1-30 Savannah, Smoke Gocken of Kathleen, Fred Gordon of Conyers,
1-31 and Dick Phillips of Jacksonville, Alabama; and pitchers
1-32 Wheeler Fowler of Decatur and Billy King of Franklin.
1-33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
1-34 members of this body congratulate the Georgia Peaches on
1-35 winning the 1996 Senior Softball-USA World Championship

2- 1 tournament and convey their best wishes to these terrific
2- 2 softballers.
2- 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
2- 4 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
2- 5 this resolution to each member of the Georgia Peaches
2- 6 softball team.
