In what many lawmakers were calling the most important piece of legislation which is going to come before the General Assembly this year, the House passed, after a long debate, S.R. 463, by a vote of 141-30.

The measure sets up a referendum on next November's ballot that, if approved by the voters, will allow the General Assembly to abolish parole. Voters would decide at the polls in November whether to tell the legislature to restrict parole as of 1999.

Supporters of the resolution claimed it was smart but tough and that a vehicle was now in place, if the voters approve, to begin eliminating early prison releases.

Those opposed believe that the seven deadly sins such as murder and rape should be included in the referendum for voter's approval and that this resolution did absolutely nothing.

All of the members did agree however, that the goal was to achieve truth in sentencing and protecting the citizens of Georgia was of the upmost importance.

Companion legislation, S.R. 477 was also passed by a vote of 167-0 today that creates a bi-partisan commission to work on what crimes should be eliminated.

Georgia already has some of the toughest laws against criminals in the country and if the voters approve, could be even tougher.

S.R. 463 now returns to the Senate for agreement or disagreement.
