The leadership in the House of Representatives may assume many forms.
The Speaker is the presiding officer of the House, elected every two years among the membership of the House. Thomas B. Murphy is the Speaker of the Georiga House. He has been speaker since 1974. The Speaker's duties, clearly outlined in the Constitution, State Laws, and House Rules, include making all committee appointments and assigning chairman to the 32 standing committees.
House members also elect the Speaker Pro-Tempore. This position is currently held by Rep. Jack Connell of Augusta. Rep. Connell has been Speaker Pro-Tempore since 1976.
The Georgia House of Representatives also have strong leadership in both the Majority and Minority Caucuses.
Majority Caucus
The Democratic or Majority Caucus represents the postitions of all 112 Democratic members of the House. The Chairman of the Majority Caucus, Rep. Bill Lee of Forest Park, is also the Chairman of the Rules Committee.
The Majority Leader, Rep. Larry Walker of Perry, expresses the views of the majority on key issues.
The other officers of the Majority Caucus are Rep. Tommy Stephenson of Commerce and Rep. LaNett Stanley of Atlanta. Rep. Tommy Stephenson is the Majority Whip. The role of the whip is to gauge opinions and inform other Democrats of plans and strategies. Rep. Stanley is the Majority Secretary.

Minority Caucus
The Republican or Minority Caucus is comprised of 68 members. Rep. Mike Evans of Cumming is the Chairman of the Minority Caucus. The Minority Leader, Rep. Robert Irvin of Atlanta, acts as the spokesman for the Republicans on the House floor, presenting the group's viewpoint on the issues. The Minority Whip is Rep. Earl Ehrhart of Powder Springs. Like his counterpart in the Majority Caucus, Rep. Evans keeps in touch with the Republican members. Other members of the Minority Caucus are Garland Pinholster of Ballground and Anne Mueller of Savannah. Rep. Pinholster is the Vice Chairman and Rep. Mueller is the Minority Secretary.
