                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Honoring Fred D. Bentley, Sr.; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 2  WHEREAS, Fred D. Bentley, Sr., was born in Marietta, 
  1- 3  Georgia, in 1926.  He grew up in Marietta and attended 
  1- 4  Presbyterian College where he received his undergraduate 
  1- 5  degree.  He received his law degree from Emory University; 
  1- 6  and 
 
  1- 7  WHEREAS, since beginning private practice in 1948, Mr. 
  1- 8  Bentley has been a senior member of the firms of Bentley & 
  1- 9  Dew; Bentley & Bartlett; Bentley, Awtrey & Bartlett; 
  1-10  Edwards, Bentley, Awtrey & Parker; Bentley & Schindelar; and 
  1-11  now Bentley, Bentley & Bentley.  He is a member of the 
  1-12  American Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association, and 
  1-13  the National Trial Lawyers Association.  He has been 
  1-14  admitted to practice before the superior and state courts of 
  1-15  Georgia; Georgia Court of Appeals; Georgia Supreme Court; 
  1-16  United States District Court; United States Court of 
  1-17  Appeals; and United States Supreme Court; and 
 
  1-18  WHEREAS, Mr. Bentley is the past president of the Cobb 
  1-19  County Chamber of Commerce, the past state chairman of the 
  1-20  Georgia Mental Health Association, and a member of the 
  1-21  boards of various community service organizations, 
  1-22  hospitals, and educational institutions; and 
 
  1-23  WHEREAS, in the 1950's, Mr. Bentley served three terms in 
  1-24  the Georgia House of Representatives and one term in the 
  1-25  Georgia Senate in 1958.  He was named "Young Man of the 
  1-26  Year" in 1951 and one of the "Hundred Men of Tomorrow" for 
  1-27  the metropolitan Atlanta area by Time Magazine in 1953.  He 
  1-28  is a recipient of the Clarice C. Bagwell Distinguished 
  1-29  Service Award and the Blue Key Honorary Award, and he 
  1-30  received a volunteer of the year award; and 
 
  1-31  WHEREAS, Mr. Bentley was very instrumental in bringing about 
  1-32  the multimillion dollar Kennedy Interchange in the 
  1-33  Cumberland-Galleria area which relieved the dangerous 
  1-34  traffic congestion there; and

  2- 1  WHEREAS, his outstanding contributions were recognized by HR 
  2- 2  849, which named the Akers Mill Road bridge over I-75 in 
  2- 3  Cobb County the Fred Bentley, Sr., Bridge. 
 
  2- 4  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the 
  2- 5  members of this body honor the extraordinary achievements of 
  2- 6  Fred Bentley, Sr., and commend him for all he has done for 
  2- 7  the people of Georgia. 
 
  2- 8  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  2- 9  authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
