                        A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 
                               AN ACT 
 
 
  1- 1  To amend Part 12 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 12 of 
  1- 2  the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to the 
  1- 3  Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority, so as to change the 
  1- 4  membership of the authority; to provide for related matters; 
  1- 5  to provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; 
  1- 6  and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 7       BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: 
 
  1- 8                           SECTION 1. 
 
  1- 9  Part 12 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 12 of the 
  1-10  Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to the Georgia 
  1-11  Sports Hall of Fame Authority, is amended by striking 
  1-12  subsection (b) of Code Section 12-3-562, relating to the 
  1-13  creation, membership, terms, vacancies, expenses, existence, 
  1-14  and assignment of the authority, and inserting in lieu 
  1-15  thereof a new subsection to read as follows: 
 
  1-16      "(b)(1) The terms of all members of the authority who 
  1-17      are in office on April 30, 1998, shall terminate on such 
  1-18      date, and new members shall be appointed to the 
  1-19      authority for initial terms beginning on May 1, 1998, as 
  1-20      specified in this subsection.  From May 1, 1998, until 
  1-21      January 1, 1999, the authority shall consist of 16 
  1-22      members.  On and after January 1, 1999 Thereafter, the 
  1-23      authority shall consist of 15 18 members. 
 
  1-24      (2) Members shall be appointed as follows: 
 
  1-25        (A) Three members shall be appointed by the Governor 
  1-26        for initial terms of office ending on January 1, 1999; 
 
  1-27        (B) Three members shall be appointed by the Governor 
  1-28        for initial terms of office ending on June 30, 2000; 
 
  1-29        (C) Two members One member shall be appointed by the 
  1-30        Governor for an initial term initial terms of office 
  1-31        ending on December 31, 2000;

  2- 1        (D) Five members shall be appointed by the Governor 
  2- 2        for initial terms of office ending on December 31, 
  2- 3        2002; 
 
  2- 4        (E) One member shall be appointed by the President of 
  2- 5        the Senate for an initial term of office ending on 
  2- 6        January 1, 1999; 
 
  2- 7        (F) Two members One member shall be appointed by the 
  2- 8        President of the Senate for an initial term initial 
  2- 9        terms of office ending on December 31, 2002; 
 
  2-10        (G) One member shall be appointed by the Speaker of 
  2-11        the House of Representatives for an initial term of 
  2-12        office ending on January 1, 1999;  and 
 
  2-13        (H) Two members One member shall be appointed by the 
  2-14        Speaker of the House of Representatives for an initial 
  2-15        term initial terms of office ending on December 31, 
  2-16        2002. 
 
  2-17      (3) A successor to each member shall be appointed by the 
  2-18      same appointing official as provided in paragraph (2) of 
  2-19      this subsection, provided that the Governor shall 
  2-20      appoint successors for only two of the members appointed 
  2-21      by the Governor with initial terms ending on January 1, 
  2-22      1999.  Following the initial terms specified in 
  2-23      paragraph (2) of this subsection, the terms of all 
  2-24      members shall be four years. 
 
  2-25      (4) Any elected or appointed state, county, municipal, 
  2-26      or school board official or employee, except officials 
  2-27      and employees of the legislative or judicial branches of 
  2-28      state government, may be appointed and serve as a member 
  2-29      of the authority." 
 
  2-30                           SECTION 2. 
 
  2-31  This Act shall become effective upon its approval by the 
  2-32  Governor or upon its becoming law without such approval. 
 
  2-33                           SECTION 3. 
 
  2-34  All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are 
  2-35  repealed.
