                             A RESOLUTION 
  1- 1  Recognizing and commending Dr. Walter E. Massey, President 
  1- 2  of Morehouse College; and for other purposes. 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, Dr. Walter E. Massey is a nationally recognized 
  1- 4  scholar in physics who has served as President of Morehouse 
  1- 5  College since August, 1995, and provides exceptional 
  1- 6  leadership and vision to this private institution of higher 
  1- 7  education known for its development of African-American men; 
  1- 8  and 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, Morehouse College is the alma mater of its ninth 
  1-10  president who previously served as provost and senior vice 
  1-11  president for academic affairs for the University of 
  1-12  California, director of the National Science Foundation, 
  1-13  vice president for research at the University of Chicago, 
  1-14  director of the Argonne National Laboratory, and dean of the 
  1-15  college and professor of physics at Brown University; and 
  1-16  WHEREAS, President Massey serves on a broad range of 
  1-17  organizations, including the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce 
  1-18  Education Committee, the Commission on Cost of Higher 
  1-19  Education, member of the board of directors of Morehouse 
  1-20  School of Medicine, chairman of the Atlanta Committee for 
  1-21  Public Education, and member of the boards of the Atlanta 
  1-22  Symphony Orchestra and the Woodruff Arts Center; and 
  1-23  WHEREAS, this distinguished educator has fostered a renewed 
  1-24  commitment to academic excellence among the faculty, 
  1-25  students, alumni, and friends of this renowned institution 
  1-26  and a bright future for this intellectual community so very 
  1-27  special to this state and its capital city. 
  1-29  members of this body recognize and commend Dr. Walter E. 
  1-30  Massey for his sterling leadership at Morehouse College and 
  1-31  convey to him their sincerest respect and best wishes for 
  1-32  continued success. 
  1-33  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  1-34  authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of 
  1-35  this resolution to Dr. Walter E. Massey.
