1- 1 Commending Betty Starr Brooks and Douglas C. Brooks; and for
1- 2 other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Betty Starr Brooks and Douglas C. Brooks are well
1- 4 known to the citizens of Jasper and Pickens County where
1- 5 they are admired for their community service; and
1- 6 WHEREAS, Betty has a lifelong history as a volunteer,
1- 7 beginning as an Altrusan in 1967 and serving as president of
1- 8 the Atlanta and Washington clubs and as a District Governor;
1- 9 and
1-10 WHEREAS, in addition to her career with Unysis Corporation,
1-11 she has been a valued member of the Pickens County Chamber
1-12 of Commerce, a graduate of Leadership-Pickens, and a member
1-13 of the Jasper Lions Club and Mountainside Medical Center
1-14 Auxiliary; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Douglas is a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean
1-16 conflict who became a senior executive with the U.S.
1-17 Department of Housing and Urban Development and retired with
1-18 25 years of service in 1983; and
1-19 WHEREAS, he has generously given his time to the Pickens
1-20 County Public Library, AARP and the advisory council on
1-21 aging for 15 counties, and the First Baptist Church; and
1-22 WHEREAS, he was the director of the Pickens County Chamber
1-23 of Commerce and received the Golden Deed Award from the
1-24 Retired Teachers Association in 1994 and the Distinguished
1-25 Service Award from Pickens County Partners for Educational
1-26 Excellence in 1997.
1-27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-28 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Betty
1-29 Starr Brooks and Douglas C. Brooks for their superb
1-30 community service and exemplary volunteerism.
1-31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-32 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-33 appropriate copy of this resolution to Betty Starr Brooks
1-34 and Douglas C. Brooks.
