                             A RESOLUTION 
  1- 1  Recognizing the Georgia Association of Drug Court 
  1- 2  Professionals and National Drug Court Week, June 1-7, 1999; 
  1- 3  and for other purposes. 
  1- 4  WHEREAS, drug courts provide the focus and leadership for 
  1- 5  community-wide, anti-drug systems, bringing together 
  1- 6  criminal justice, treatment, education, and other community 
  1- 7  partners in the fight against drug abuse and criminality; 
  1- 8  and 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, drug court programs combine intensive judicial 
  1-10  supervision, mandatory substance abuse treatment and drug 
  1-11  testing, escalating sanctions, and incentives in order to 
  1-12  break the cycle of drug addiction and its concomitant crime; 
  1-13  and 
  1-14  WHEREAS, the judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, 
  1-15  treatment and rehabilitation professionals, law enforcement 
  1-16  and corrections personnel, researchers and educators, 
  1-17  national and community leaders, and others dedicated to the 
  1-18  movement have had a profound impact through hard work and 
  1-19  commitment to their communities; and 
  1-20  WHEREAS, the drug court movement has grown from the 12 
  1-21  original drug courts in 1994 to over 400 drug courts 
  1-22  nationally, with many more in the planning stages. 
  1-24  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the 
  1-25  week of June 1-7, 1999, as "National Drug Court Week" and 
  1-26  commend the practitioners and participants who make drug 
  1-27  courts work and the significant contributions that drug 
  1-28  courts have made and continue to make in reducing drug usage 
  1-29  and crime. 
  1-30  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  1-31  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  1-32  appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia 
  1-33  Association of Drug Court Professionals.
