                             A RESOLUTION 
  1- 1  Designating the Captain Henry Will Jones Bridge over the 
  1- 2  Alapaha River; and for other purposes. 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, Captain Henry Will Jones of Lanier County was 
  1- 4  killed in action on October 18, 1944, while serving as a 
  1- 5  commanding officer of a United States Marine Corps company 
  1- 6  in the South Pacific during World War II; and he was awarded 
  1- 7  posthumously the Silver Star Medal by the Secretary of the 
  1- 8  Navy in recognition of his exemplary valor; and 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, he had graduated from the University of Georgia and 
  1-10  was an instructor in the Laurens County school system when 
  1-11  he enlisted in the military following the Japanese attack on 
  1-12  Pearl Harbor; and he completed officers candidate school, 
  1-13  paratrooper training, and advanced military training with 
  1-14  the Marine Corps and was recognized as a distinguished 
  1-15  officer with considerable potential; and 
  1-16  WHEREAS, his fearless leadership, great personal valor, and 
  1-17  unrelenting devotion to duty in the face of extreme danger 
  1-18  contributed substantially to the success of his division in 
  1-19  capturing a vital stronghold; and his courage and 
  1-20  determination upheld the highest traditions of military 
  1-21  service; and 
  1-22  WHEREAS, he enjoyed nature and had a strong attachment to 
  1-23  the region in which he had spent his youth exploring the 
  1-24  rivers, forests, and wildlife; and he often expressed his 
  1-25  dream of returning to the Alapaha River in his letters home 
  1-26  to his family; and 
  1-27  WHEREAS, it is most fitting and appropriate to honor this 
  1-28  outstanding young officer who so gallantly gave his life for 
  1-29  his country. 
  1-31  GEORGIA that the bridge on Georgia Highway 37 that crosses 
  1-32  that portion of the Alapaha River in Lanier County be 
  1-33  designated the Captain Henry Will Jones Bridge. 
  1-34  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Commissioner of 
  1-35  Transportation is authorized and directed to place signs at 
  1-36  appropriate locations along the highway designating the 
  2- 1  bridge over the Alapaha River as the Captain Henry Will 
  2- 2  Jones Bridge. 
  2- 3  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2- 4  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2- 5  appropriate copy of this resolution to Robert E. Jones.
