                             A RESOLUTION 
  1- 1  Recognizing and commending Columbus Councilor and Mayor Pro 
  1- 2  Tem A.J. McClung on the occasion of his retirement from 
  1- 3  public service; and for other purposes. 
  1- 4  WHEREAS, the citizens, business interests, and community 
  1- 5  leaders of Columbus, Georgia, have benefited immeasurably 
  1- 6  from the distinguished career of Honorable A.J. McClung in 
  1- 7  city government; and 
  1- 8  WHEREAS, he has served with the utmost ability as a Columbus 
  1- 9  Councilor and as Mayor Pro Tem of Columbus for nearly 30 
  1-10  years, and his leadership, expertise, and integrity have 
  1-11  contributed immensely to the city's achievements and unity; 
  1-12  and 
  1-13  WHEREAS, he was instrumental in securing local support for 
  1-14  the consolidation of the city and county governments in 
  1-15  1970, and this progressive accomplishment enabled his city 
  1-16  to serve as a model for other local governments regarding 
  1-17  governmental modernization and reform; and 
  1-18  WHEREAS, many local leaders have credited A.J. McClung as 
  1-19  the person who played a pivotal role in quelling racial 
  1-20  unrest in the early 1970s and who was the bridge between 
  1-21  communities, interests, and generations on public matters; 
  1-22  and 
  1-23  WHEREAS, his reputation as a political leader who was 
  1-24  insightful, fair-minded, compassionate, and disciplined 
  1-25  enabled the city council to perform its complex 
  1-26  responsibilities in an open forum and in a deliberative 
  1-27  process; and 
  1-28  WHEREAS, in addition to his superb public service, A.J. 
  1-29  McClung has given generously of his time, talents, and 
  1-30  energy to individuals, organizations, and social causes, and 
  1-31  his commitment and spirit have influenced the lives of 
  1-32  countless people and inspire us to follow his example. 
  1-34  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and 
  1-35  commend Mayor Pro Tem A.J. McClung for his exceptional 
  1-36  leadership as a member of the Columbus Council and convey to 
  2- 1  him their sincerest appreciation and best wishes as he 
  2- 2  retires from public service. 
  2- 3  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  2- 4  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  2- 5  appropriate copy of this resolution to Honorable A.J. 
  2- 6  McClung.
