                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Recognizing TV-Turnoff Week in 1998; and for other purposes. 
 
  1- 2  WHEREAS, TV-Turnoff Week is designed to encourage children 
  1- 3  and adults to spend more time in activities such as talking 
  1- 4  with family members, civic involvement, reading, and 
  1- 5  exercise; and 
 
  1- 6  WHEREAS, according to the A.C. Nielson Co., the average 
  1- 7  American spends three hours and 44 minutes a day watching 
  1- 8  television; and 
 
  1- 9  WHEREAS, TV-Free America is sponsoring National TV-Turnoff 
  1-10  Week during the period April 22-28, 1998.  In 1997, over 
  1-11  four million kids and parents across the United States 
  1-12  turned off their televisions for all or part of that week 
  1-13  and turned to more productive, physical, and intellectually 
  1-14  stimulating pursuits; and 
 
  1-15  WHEREAS, research indicates that community interest and 
  1-16  volunteerism as well as reading and family interactions can 
  1-17  be stimulated by participating in National TV-Turnoff Week; 
  1-18  and 
 
  1-19  WHEREAS, the commitment of this state to the health and 
  1-20  growth of its children and families is demonstration by this 
  1-21  recognition of 1998 TV-Turnoff Week. 
 
  1-22  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 
  1-23  REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize 
  1-24  April 22-28, 1998, as TV-Turnoff Week and express their wish 
  1-25  that children and adults can spend more quality time with 
  1-26  each other and thus strengthen the bonds of their families. 
 
  1-27  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 
  1-28  Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 
  1-29  appropriate copy of this resolution to Margaret D. Landry.
